1) Yosemite National Park has many natural waterfalls within its boundaries, including horsetail fall and yosemite falls. Horsetail fall which is 1000 feet tall is 1425 feet shorter than yosemite falls. Write a equation to find the height of yosemite falls then use mental math to solve the equation.
2) The population of cape coral , florida increased by 27 thousand people with 1990 to 2000. in 2000, the population of cape coral was 102 people. Write an equation to find the population of cape coral in 1990. Then use mental math to solve the eqation
3)In 2001, the cost of mailing a leter was 17 times the cost of mailing a letter in 1885. If it cost $.35 to mail a letter in 2001 find the cost of mailing a letter in 1885

1. let x=horsetail fall’s height
y=yosemite fall’s height.
x = 1000
y = x + 1425
y = 1000 + 1425
y = 2425 ft.
in #2 do you mean 102 thousand?
2. let x=population in 1990
y=population in 2000
y = x + (27%x)
y = x + 0.27(x)
y = x(1 + 0.27)
x = y/(1+0.27)
x = 102000 / 1.27
x = 80315 persons
3. x = cost in 2001
y = cost in 1885
x = 35
x = 17 y
y = x / 17
y = 35 / 17
y = 2.058 dollars
